Chess Records is one of Chicago’s most influential cultural institutions. The label was critical in the launching of rock & roll, and defined electric blues. Founded by Leonard and Phil Chess, this handsome building at at 2120 S. Michigan Avenue became the home of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, Chuck Berry, and many others who added their voice and music to the backbeat and youth oriented themes that revolutionized music and culture in the 1950s.
