The Hippodrome Theatre

Baltimore MD
The Hippodrome opened in 1914 as a vaudeville stage hosting everything from comedians and dancers to animal acts and magicians before spending many later decades as a movie palace. The theatre is an incredible story of architectural wonders surviving behind makeshift renovations. During the early 2000s, crews discovered the original proscenium arch buried behind a false wall, the beautifully painted dome concealed by layers of acoustic tiles, and much of the ornate plaster work, murals, and decorative paint hidden under grime and patchwork. In addition, the original color palette and stenciled designs were uncovered, helping guide renovations that led to the rare architectural feat of a faithfully executed Vaudeville Palace revival.
