The Dakota

Upper West Side - Manhattan NY
There are endless stories and anecdotes about the Dakota, having anchored this intersection for nearly 150 years now. When the building was first constructed In the 1880s, New Yorkers thought the Upper West Side was as far away as the Dakotas, and it turns out Edward Clark (of the Singer Company) loved this joke, and named the apartments accordingly. It's hard to imagine Central Park West as a sparsely populated rural wilderness of Manhattan, but the completion of central park, the subway system, and more real estate developments that followed made this icon an important early chapter of the area's history.
